Last night at the theatre I watched what may well be the most disappointing movie of the summer: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. This is a perfect example of lazy screenwriting and underutilized talent. Director Tim Burton could have offered us so much more with a cast that includes Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Jenna Ortega and Monica Bellucci. Unfortunately, he entrusted the screenwriting to Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith, who merit a time-out for this one. I can't help thinking three women would have done a much better job. They would have given us more satisfying female characters than the half-baked ones we got. Don't expect the same entertaining Lydia Deetz from the original Beetlejuice; this one is a defeated, pill-popping pushover devoid of wit. Also, every buildup fizzles out (Bellucci's being the most disappointing). If your time is valuable to you, you're better off rewatching Beetlejuice (1988) or an episode of Wednesday (stars Ortega). The sets and costumes are the best parts of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and the trailer promises much better than Burton delivers.
