I had forgotten just how much violence against women appears in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first of the Indiana Jones franchise starring Harrison Ford. Karen Allen, Ford's love interest, is manhandled and grabbed. She is abducted three times. She is gagged and tied to a post, wrists bound. In a later scene she is tied to a different post. While she is held by men a man advances on her holding a red hot poker to torture her. Men throw her into a pit full of snakes. And if all that wasn't enough, while caressing her hair a man tells other men he will sell her and get a good price for her.
It's a grey day, perfect for writing, and I've just added this movie to my second upcoming book. It focuses solely on women in film and should come out shortly after I publish the first one, about the sexualization of women in media.
