The second batch of proofs for my little coffee table book, What is a Woman?, arrived in the mail two days ago. They looked fine so I made no changes to them and made the book available at Blurb.ca. You can order it here: https://www.blurb.ca/b/10208772-what-is-a-woman. What is a Woman? is a response to a discussion that has become absurd and aims to lift women’s spirits. Fifty percent of my profits will be donated to Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, Canada’s longest standing rape crisis centre, which lost its city funding earlier this years due to its woman-only policy. I have posted a video introduction to it on my YouTube channel (ACPicks). From the age of 16 I have considered myself a feminist. Unfortunately, it is actually necessary now to interrupt this train of thought to review a couple of dictionary definitions. A feminist is a person who believes in or favours feminism (Gage Canadian Dictionary). Feminism is a philosophy and a movement advocating rights and opportunities for women which are equal to those that exist for men (Gage Canadian Dictionary). Now that we've got the definitions out of the way I can continue.
In 2015 when I began writing a book about the sexualization of women in media and violence against women (VAW) progressives were supportive. Later when I told people about the feminist film guide I started writing in 2018 progressives were supportive and interested. But now for some reason when I stand for the rights of women and girls progressives are not supportive. They attack. I have been insulted for standing up for women and girls (!). I have been locked out of Twitter without an explanation since June 18th. The unofficial Twitter ban is impersonal and therefor not hurtful. The lack of support from family and friends, however, is crushing. I have known for a long time that there is a generalized lack of regard for women and girls; it is for this reason that I wrote two 700-page books about women and girls (still in the works). But the realization that this lack of regard extends to women who should know better... this is demoralizing. Have these women suddenly forgotten about FGM, sex-selective abortions, honour killings, acid attacks, child brides, feet binding, witch hunts, the fight for the vote (to own property, for access to abortion and women's shelters, etc.), rape culture, widespread gynocide, etc.? Have they forgotten that we live in a patriarchy? First and second wave feminist fought hard to gain rights for women and girls. And now young women are happily giving these rights away. They are even giving away the right for us to define ourselves! Women are actually letting men define us in relation to men! Just as it is incredibly offensive to blacks to call them non-whites it is incredibly offensive to call women cis-women (or the latest one I've heard: non-trans women). Women need to wake up. The packaging may have changed, but it's the same old misogyny. © 2020 Alline Cormier Yesterday I ordered new proofs of What is a Woman? and was notified that I should have them by July 22. If they look good my little coffee table book in support of women and Joanne K. Rowling will be available on the 23rd or 24th. Fifty percent of my profits from the sale of this book will be donated to Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, Canada’s longest standing rape crisis centre, which lost its city funding this year due to its woman-only policy.
© 2020 Alline Cormier The day before yesterday I received a shipment of my coffee table book, entitled What is a Woman? This was supposed to be a joyous event, one I had been looking forward to. So I was mortified when I unpacked them and discovered that the print job was botched. The pictures were out of place, not showing the right images. What could have gone wrong? In June I had ordered proofs and these mistakes were not present in the proofs. I rushed to my computer to contact Blurb, the company that handles the printing, shipping and invoicing for me. It doesn’t have a helpline. The only way to contact its staff is by email. So I emailed Blurb about the problem and made What is a Woman? unavailable for sale. I wanted to limit the damages as much as possible. Then I put out some notices where I could: Facebook, Spinster and YouTube. Unfortunately, I couldn’t post anything on Twitter because I have been locked out of since June 18 without an explanation.
That first evening and yesterday I spent a lot of time fielding people’s questions about this botched print job. I have contacted the people I know who bought a copy of the book. Unfortunately, because Blurb handles the orders I don’t know who ordered every copy. I only know about the people who told me they ordered a copy. When my son came home that first night he helped me set up an alternate Twitter account, and I was able to post a notice there, too (ACPicks1). I have made a list of people who will need to be sent a proper copy of What is a Woman?, but there are four copies still unaccounted for. If you ordered a copy and have not been in contact with me please do. My life feels on hold until I get this mess sorted out, but I will try to be more productive today. Thank you to everyone who has been supportive and understanding. I created this book to support women. Hopefully Blurb will show some professional integrity, and we will get What is a Woman? back in the online bookstore soon. © 2020 Alline Cormier |
