The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)

This statement will undoubtedly make me sound like Ebenezer Scrooge, but I am not sad that Christmas is over. The closer I get to publishing my book the less interest I have in anything else, including Christmas. So now that the cards have been sent, presents opened, etc. I can get back to the final sprint. After touching up my notes on Misery (1990), Fatal Attraction (1987) and M*A*S*H (1970) in the last few days I am really enjoying spending some time on The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) this evening. It is so refreshing to watch a movie full of supportive friendships, as well as congeniality and affection between women. It also includes a loving mother/daughter relationship. Things that are still all too rare in Movieland. The Jane Austen Book Club scores well for women’s presence and voice, includes no violence against women (VAW) and there are five significant female characters. Unfortunately, tomorrow I will likely have to spend some time on A Clockwork Orange (1971). After that I'm guessing I will need to wash out my eyes with Hidden Figures (2016), Made in Dagenham (2010) or another movie that has something to offer women.

Montréal massacre

Thirty years ago today a misogynist walked into École Polytechnique in Montréal and shot 14 women dead because he hated feminists. It was the worst mass shooting in Canadian history. These women were:

  • Geneviève Bergeron
  • Hélène Colgan
  • Nathalie Croteau
  • Barbara Daigneault
  • Anne-Marie Edward
  • Maud Haviernick
  • Maryse Laganière
  • Maryse Leclair
  • Anne-Marie Lemay
  • Sonia Pelletier
  • Michèle Richard
  • Annie St-Arneault
  • Annie Turcotte
  • Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz

On December 6, 1989, I was a teenager living in Germany and doubt I would have heard about the tragedy if it had not been for my mother, a feminist, who was very saddened. One of the main reasons I am writing this book is because of the pandemic of violence against women (VAW). On this day in particular I remember these victims. My hope for my books is that they will help make the world a safer place for women and girls.
