The sexualization of women in Hollywood is a time-honoured tradition. While I was including Ghostbusters (1984) in my second book--this one focuses solely on movies--I came across the picture below, taken during the filming of the movie. It features the female monster Gozer, played by Yugoslavian actress Slavitza Jovan, in high heels. She has one hand on Dan Aykroyd's thigh and the other on Bill Murray's shoulder and unlike the men, her costume makes the outline of her body clearly visible. She is all about sex. The men are all about action and getting a job done.
For over two years I have been analysing hundreds of movies, as well as their posters and taglines. There was never a time in Hollywood when women were not sexualized. Here's to hoping the third decade of the 21st century will be different. © 2018 Alline Cormier
